Your clients are the bread and butter of your graphic design business. Make sure you treat them well. When you talk to your prospective clients, make sure you speak to them in a pleasant voice and in an upbeat tone. Maintain a positive attitude, but do not take their inquiries for granted. Remember, potential clients can change their mind about you in a split second.
More importantly, always make sure you show present clients how much you appreciate them. Your regular clients are the backbone of your business, and without them you would go under. Make sure you complete all projects on time. Furthermore, clients appreciate it when update them regularly as you work on a project.
Try not be neurotic -- calling your clients five times a day, or e-mailing them every two minutes. However, they do appreciate a daily update, or at least every other day. Make sure you leave your client with plenty of contact information so they can get a hold of you. (You can do so in ways that will not jeopardize your security.)
If for some reason you experience a delay beyond your control, make sure you alert your clients right away. Most of them are understanding with freelancers as long as they know you are still working on the project. Try not to abuse that leniency, however. It can grow tiring to clients.
If you have an overload of work then you might want to hire a copy editor. That person can inspect every design you create with great care. It will ensure that you will receive more work from that client again.
Speaking of checking over your designs, you will want to watch out for any color that does not belong in a certain area. Furthermore, there cannot be and smudges or flaws or any scratches of any kind. Color smudges typically occur if you've scanned a photo or painting. If you find a flaw, you should fix it with today's photo editing technology.
This leads to another very important aspect of keeping your clients satisfied. It is important for you to use the most professional photo editing and object illustrating programs. Try to avoid cheap, limited editing programs unless it is an open source program for professionals. The graphic editing program Gimp is an example of an open sourced program used by professionals. The industry standard program right now in graphic arts is Photoshop.
If you are operating on a tight budget or you are just starting out, you may consider a program such as Photoshop Elements. It gives you all but one percent of what Photoshop gives you at a fraction of the price.
You do have one other option. Ordinarily you cannot get away with using limited software editions to create your graphics. If you can create professional-quality material with ordinarily useless editing programs, then it could work toward your advantage. You could offer the same services at a lower price to people, and they would still be satisfied with the work. Most professionals generally use the professional standard for creating graphics and photos. Besides Photoshop, you also can implement Adobe Flash, or a variety of different Corel paint and draw products as well. These programs help you expertly arrange and create graphics.
